Weekly Reads: April 24 2015

We took one day off this week to have a team off-site and expand our creativity. Tired in perfectly to "why keep things weird at work," we got to take an improv class together. If you've ever wanted to see co-founder and CTO Scott Sundvor act like an antibody, take a moment to appreciate this clip.

Now, to what we've been reading this past week.

Science

You may have seen these awesome photos celebrating 25 years of the Hubble Telescope. This shows what long term vision (no pun intended) can do. While we work hard every day to get our first product to people's hands, we can't take our eyes away from the idea of food transparency.

Food

Juicero raised a bunch of money. Like Keurig for juice. I don't think we have space for any more devices in the office kitchen but might make an exception for this!

We also learned about Food Trace, which connects farmers and restaurants.

The entire team is trying to figure out who is going to make this delicious gluten-free vegan paleo tiramisu.

Tech

Navdy also raised some cash. Anyone order it? Sounds like pre-orders should begin shipping this year. Coin says it's getting ready to ship.

Honor, our upstairs neighbors, announced a $20M raise.

Tech & Humor

Evidently we're spending too much time with devices. While this is humorous, it's something we recognize as a team is important. One of the things we've discussed is doing more walking meetings or going to the gym together. Somehow GTL takes on a different meaining here, more like Gym, Tech, Lunch.

From our friends at House of Pretty, we heard about "we put a chip on it!" No industry can take itself too seriously. So anything viewed in this light might seem ridiculous, but in context, there are some good ideas. Ok, may not all of them. A good catch all of new companies too.

John Oliver explains patent trolls. While humorous, also a good backgrounder if you don't know much about the subject.

Internet of Things

Want to check out the Internet of Things World trade show? You can attend the expo part for free, but have to register. May 12 - 13, some of the 6SL team will be there.

Marketing

Doing crowd-funding? Kickstarter has a list of novel reward ideas. Take a peek!

Popular Culture

Sometimes we have to think about things outside the office too. One thrilled us and the other made us all go what?

DC Super Hero Girls
Fuller House

OK, so we can't mock Scott for his role as antibody without sharing a photoset of the entire team working on improv activities to help with creative problem solving.
