We've had another busy week here at 6SensorLabs. We're ending today with a soccer game vs. our office mates, Compology. Juice boxes and orange slices are ready!
Lead Scientist Dr. Jingqing Zhang hosted a great webinar this week. Jingqing talked about the product, how it works and a little bit of our future plans.
Our interns also had some fun this week designing something based on messing with our logo, device design and office conversation. They're all doing hard work, too - but this made us all smile.
We've also been doing our normal reading. Here's some things that caught our interest this week.
Health & Food
We've read a lot about food substitutes and emerging food products from Soylent to Hampton Creek. Turns out Google finds these interesting this week and tried to invest in a company making fake meat, but the deal fell through when the two parties couldn't agree upon a price. The NY Times covers some new thinking on artificial sweeteners vs. sugar.
Springwise put together their top 10 food and tech trends. Fake meat was not on the list, but covers retail, restaurants and tech trends.
The FDA announced winners in a contest to speed up pathogen testing in food. You can only imagine the impact of something like this on the food supply.
UCLA researchers create a smartphone based device that will allow for rapid reading of various diagnostic tests. More chemistry + sensors! The cool thing is how interdisciplinary this project was: electrical engineers, physics, astronomy, bioengineering, pathology and laboratory medicine, surgery, among others. We don't have all of those disciplines here at 6SL (yet!), but we are just as collaborative in our day-to-day work.
Research on smart capsules has been released - these capsules could manipulate when and where a medicine was activated in a body. This would be particularly useful for diseases that impact the large intestine, since most ingested drugs are absorbed through the stomach or small intestine.
Ikea's view of the future kitchen at home shows how rapidly technology comes into every part of life.
We came across this young man's GoFundMe. His food allergies are among the most extreme we've ever read.
Business & Technology
The rummors are swirling - it sounds like NBC may invest in Buzzfeed and Vox Media. Both of these companies have come a long way in the past few years.
Amazon launched a startup marketplace aimed at helping small startups create storefronts. This marketplace is called LaunchPad. You can find wares from games to home security and pet cams.
We love the vision for Aclima. Their dedication to air quality is the same way we feel about bringing food transparency to people.
Google lets you know the optimal time to visit a hotspot.
The mobile team has been greedily devouring articles. Everything from opinions about app constellations to these two great posts on design by Erik Kennedy (part 1, part 2), to exploring a tool for creating fake data for profiles.

- One of our interns, Ingvild, is here from Norway. In her honor, check out this amazing shot of the Aurora Borealis. Surreal. She also shared this run in Norway, with a video for those afraid of heights.
- Brandy the Pug surfs!
- Subway Love
- Key & Peele imagine a world where teachers are the same as sports stars are in the real one.
Finally we'll leave you with this gift from Nina Bargiel, who asked this in response to Carla's tweet about the webinar.
